FE-120 Microphone

FE-120 Description

The FE120 is our general-purpose instrument spot mic; it's smooth frequency response, and overall warm, but detailed sound makes it suitable for a wide variety of sources, as well as a main microphone for recording live events. It works great in quiet situations, even as a diffuse-field mic, due to the low noise internal preamplifier. It also handles high SPL peaks thanks to the variable gain FET stage. Just like the FE-84, it is extremely compact, so it's great for an unobtrusive live recording setup or for fitting into tight spaces.

Customizable preamplifier:
We make our microphones as customizable as possible, while still maintaining a professional construction as well as professional results. In this microphone, you can choose whatever op amp you want to be used in the preamp, and we will put it in for you. That way, you can fine-tune the sound of our microphone to your liking. The op amp is a major contributor to the overall sound because it is strained more than any other part in the microphone, especially when driving long cable lengths. See our Info page for a selection of op-amps. The FET utilized in the FE-120 was selected from a large sample group, for best noise performance. The FET stage is biased to provide maximum dynamic range.

The capsule is hard-wired, and not removable to ensure reliability. We have found in other mics that have removable capsules, that sometimes the connection between capsule and preamp can develop faults. Corrosion of the contacts can make the microphone intermittent, or introduce hum and other artifacts into the audio. These issues must be avoided in a live recording situation, and they can waste valuable time during a recording session.

With proper care (a microphone is a precision tool after all, and should be treated as such) our microphones will last for many years, without any maintenance required! Just in case, we offer a five year warranty for any problems you might have.

Internally biased capsule:
The capsule is a back-electret design. The charge-holding electret material is located on the backplate, and not on the diaphragm. The diaphragm can be manufactured using the same process and materials as a standard condenser microphone. The rear chamber formed by the holes in the backplate and the inside of the microphone body is carefully damped to avoid resonances, not a common practice with electret capsules. The low quality sound commonly associated with electret microphones doesn't apply here!
